¡Ay, caramba! (pronounced [ˈai | ka.ˈɾam.ba]) comes from the Spanish interjection ¡ay! (denoting surprise or pain) and caramba, a lace worn on the head, (which is a euphemism for carajo, an exclamation of disgust in Latin American Spanish language), from Caramba, the nickname of María Antonia Fernández, an 8th century composer who wore that kind of lace; it is a frequently used phrase in the Latin American Spanish language.
